Decision traps: an audit for decision making in manufacturing operations
Article Abstract:
General rules for decision making in manufacturing operations can be useful. However, it is common for rules to become separated from their original context, rendering them ineffective. Research in this area has developed an audit for decision making against the background of some management assumptions about manufacturing operations. It highlights possible difficulties that may arise from unthinking use of these assumptions. It is clear that managers must treat all significant decisions as decisions in their own right, rather than merely following general rules.

Baldrige and the human equation in health care mergers: employee satisfaction surveys can prevent disappointment and failure
Article Abstract:
Research into how health care organizations can ensure successful mergers has focused on North Shore Medical Center and AtlantiCare, located on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Those involved in arranging the merger of these two health care organizations decided to have them both assessed by external experts with knowledge of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria. This was intended to produce knowledge of the cultures of both organizations and highlight best practices and opportunities. A key element of this work was an employee opinion survey.
