Developing the next generation of quality leaders
Article Abstract:
National Quality Month 1992 chmn Edwin Artzt urges American businessmen to make total quality management an essential part of business, education and government. He stresses the need for partnerships between business and education to improve the quality of the nation's future leaders. Xerox Corp, for instance, started a program called 'The Total Quality Forum: Forging Strategic Links with Higher Education' which gathers business and engineering school presidents and deans with quality management business practitioners. There are companies, on the other hand, that give incentives to schools offering courses in productivity.

Quality management in an economic downturn
Article Abstract:
Total quality management should always be an optimal concern regardless of the prevailing economic condition. Sluggish economies often cause management strategies to concentrate on cost-reduction. Rather than sacrificing quality with a view to saving costs, companies should focus on improved quality measures to reduce an average of 40% loss in net revenues due to waste. This means continuousimplementation of quality management in the domains of time, inventory and receivables, manufacturing processes, and customer and supplier relations, always with consideration for employee morale and development.

AQC attendees rate Baldrige Award influence
Article Abstract:
The 1992 Annual Quality Congress participants considered the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award as an effective gauge in assessing a company's performance. However, they asserted that it cannot be a potent formula for change. Such comments were solicited by an electronic system that provided anonymity to the participants when they were asked to react to statements pertaining to the Baldrige Award. All of them strongly agreed that commitment to quality performance is more important than receiving the award.
