Measuring up in a Cincinnati suburb: how one school system used the Baldrige Award criteria to improve

Article Abstract:

Indian Hill, a 2,000-pupil public school system in suburban Cincinnati, OH, has used the Baldrige Award approach to foster improvement in a number of different ways. Reviewing available case materials produced improvement ideas and demonstrated the connections between items, while the scoring system was used to identify phases of development. Ideas have been produced by the criteria, the process of completing the application, the case materials and the feedback summary.

As such, the Baldrige Award criteria has been employed in evaluating quality programs in companies. The pursuit for quality improvement, however, should not be dependent on winning the award. Companies should prioritize customer, employee and stockholder satisfaction over recognition.
