EPA gives refiners guidance on meeting sulfur standards
Article Abstract:
The EPA issued new emissions standards for passenger vehicles and set lower limits on sulfur content in gasoline in Feb 2000. Many refiners will be forced to modify their existing facilities to comply with the new EPA requirements as these plants could be subject to major, new source review (NSR) preconstruction permitting requirments. The agency is providing guidelines on best available control technology or lowest achievable emission rate control technology for projects undertaken to comply with the new gasoline sulfur standards.

Shake the sulfur right out of fuel
Article Abstract:
Many diesel consumers and oil refiners have expressed concern about the stringent Environmental Protection Agency sulfur regulations, which call for sulfur in gasoline and diesel fuel to be reduced to 30 ppm and 15 ppm, respectively. A breakthrough desulfurization process developed by SulphCo, Bechtel Corp and Sinclair Oil Corp will hopefully appeace these concerns. The companies claim that the process can lower sulfur concentrations from several thousand parts per million to less than 15 ppm.

Petroleum refining: poised for profound changes
Article Abstract:
The petroleum refining industry is expected to undergo several major changes in the 21st century. The main factors that are expected to fuel these changes are tighter environmental regulations, improved and new transportation power-train technology and advances in science and engineering. Chemical engineers are expected to play an important role in the evolution of the industry.
