EPA under fire over legislative process
Article Abstract:
The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) passage of Stage 1 of two regulations that seeks to control the spread of waterborne microorganisms, is being criticized by the industrial sector. The two regulations, Disinfectant/Disinfection Byproduct Rule and Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule, were passed to comply with the 1996 Safe Water Drinking Act. The controversy arose from EPA's setting of maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG) for chloroform at zero levels. The industrial sector expected it to be set at 300-ppb as proposed by the EPA in March 1999. The EPA however said that it could not set the MCLG as proposed, since chloroform is linked to many other contaminants whose safety levels may not be the same with chloroform.

Open sesame: XML emerges as the new key for open manufacturing
Article Abstract:
Software vendors predict that Extensible Markup Language (XML) may become the lingua franca of open manufacturing systems with its capability to facilitate timely sharing of manufacturing information between control devices and automation systems in the plant floor. In addition, it features enhanced electronic commerce capabilities. Recognizing XML's market potential, Microsoft Corp launched its XML- based plant floor integration software in Mar 1999.
