Early modeling can cut groundwater-cleanup costs
Article Abstract:
The application of optimization technology to existing pump-and-treat (P and T) systems will result in net savings of between $200,000-$550,000 annually. P and T systems, which are used in the cleanup of Superfund sites, can benefit from computer modeling that is based on hydraulic- optimization algorithm. The computer modeling technology, also known as Modman, applies a mathematical optimization technique with a groundwater- flow model, to determine the best locations for injection and extraction wells.

New reporting rules for plant air emissions
Article Abstract:
The EPA has released a 'guidance' stipulating that plant operators are not exempted under Clean Air Act permits from the requirement to report hazardous substances emissions to the National Response Center and to state and local groups. Companies can be subject to enforcement action for failure to report certain releases. They can, however, avail of a 'burden reduction option' in reporting releases that are continuous and stable in quantity and rate.

States will get relief from neighbors' smog
Article Abstract:
The EPA has granted the petition of Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania for relief from their failure to comply with Clean Air Act ozone standards due to oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions which come from other states. The EPA has ruled that 392 electric utilities, industrial boilers and turbines must reduce their NOx emissions by 510,000/yr by May 1, 2003.
