Federal lawsuit electrifies utilities - provides engineers work
Article Abstract:
The Dept of Justice, in behalf of EPA, filed lawsuits against 32 coal- fired electric utilities for allegedly violating antipollution regulations and illegaly contaminating the air. If these civil suits are successful, the companies involved will be asked to render fines and install modern anti-pollution equipment in their facilities. The sued electric utilities are then expected to seek the help of environmental consultants and engineers to meet the stipulations commanded by the court at the lowest cost.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Washington senator Slade Gorton, seeks to separate the issue of electrical grid reliability from other restructing activities. The main contention of the bill's authors is that national deregulation initiatives are seriously affecting the reliability of the US electrical system.
