Solve problems with the appropriate SPC tool
Article Abstract:
Effective production management starts with the use of appropriate statistical-process-control tools to determine and fix problems in manufacturing systems. It is important to determine whether production managers are in the proactive or reactive mode as it determines the tools necessary. Tools include Pareto, brainstorming and fishbone techniques of obtaining data on production variables. Other tools include classical and Taguchi design-of-experiment techniques.

Measure process capability when Cp won't work
Article Abstract:
The Cp formula should be modified to enable the process capability of unusual manufacturing situations to be accurately quantified. The index, which defines potential capability by dividing the tolerance by six standard deviations, requires adjustments in cases when the process output is centered at a target that is not equal to the middle of the tolerance. For such cases, the Cp* formula is used.
