Flowing fluid makes an impact on material world
Article Abstract:
A researcher at Manchester University has developed an innovative method of absorbing shock that offers a new approach to impact absorption. Former further education physics lecturer Bill Courtney has adapted a basic idea of having a viscous liquid matrix inside a bladder in which are immersed numbers of small gas or air bubbles. Potential applications for the new material, called Manchester Material by its inventor, include protective wear for sportspeople, impact absorption in motor vehicles and fenders in boats.
