For large filter design
Article Abstract:
DGS Associates Inc's S/Filsyn 2.2 (digital filter section) provides techniques for the design, synthesis and analysis of practical high-order filters that meet detailed frequency-domain specifications. Segments of the $4,000 program support the development of infinite and finite impulse response filters in addition to an option using passband ripple, minimum stopband rejection and filter order. The program lets IIR filters be synthesized as cascaded second-order sections, as lattice filters or in terms of polynomial or partial-fraction expanded transfer-function form. It also lets FIR filters be factored into as many as five cascaded blocks and be designed using the McClellan-Parks-Rabiner algorithm or windowing techniques. The new release adds a menu-driven interface and an Extended Batch Language with example batch files for automating standard designs.

Anatomy of a magnet failure
Article Abstract:
A site has been chosen, in Dallas TX, for a proposed superconducting super collider but at the same time the project has been plagued by rumors about problems with the prototype magnets for the accelerator. Testing of the prototypes has resulted in adequate performance from only two of the eight devices, while one failed catastrophically when a coil short-circuited. The failure was caused by an overabundance of insulation, an oversized pole spacer and possibly the improper positioning of insulation tape. The prototype magnet was tested in November 1987. The ultimate root of the failure may be attributed to a tendency to implement hasty solutions to problems in order to meet the constraints of a tight schedule and budget.
