Hewlett-Packard saves development time with 3-D tolerance analysis
Article Abstract:
Hewlett-Packard Co.'s manufacturing development engineer used the VSA-3D software from Variation Systems Analysis Inc. to test the effectiveness of the company's newly-designed capping mechanism. Engr. David Johnson observed that the capping mechanism's complex assembly does not meet the goal of a 0.4-mm. interference between the cap and pen. As he tested the capping mechanism through the 3D, tolerance-analysis tool, he found that the new design was unable to maintain the 0.4-mm. interference. His research saved the company months of testing and development time.

American Rollform cuts pre-production time by days
Article Abstract:
American Rollform started its quality improvement initiatives in 1993 when it modified the quality control technique it employed in checking the position of bumpers' holes. In 1994, it developed a coordinated measuring machine check fixture to further improve its quality control process. However, it made its major accomplishment when it started using the TruPosition Probe, a portable device that allows for the easiest way to check the hole's location.

Videoconferencing cuts design time by 50%
Article Abstract:
Owens-Corning Fiberglass Corp. reduced development time in half by using PictureTel Corp.'s videoconferencing network. By eliminating travel expenses and lost work hours, videoconferencing also saved the company about $50,000. Furthermore, it allows the sequential performance of different activities such as test-result submissions and activity reviews. Finally, videoconferencing also permits greater employee participation.
