In manufacturing, milling thin walls in pockets result in either dulling of cutting tools, or deflection of walls away from the tool, or both. Therefore, machine tools are combined with gages for speedy adjustments of the work in process.

Machinists are challenged by problems of creating milled pockets with thin walls despite the higher productivity and lower cutting forces of today's machinery, but gages and tools are useful for making speed measurements of these pockets.
