Kitting versus line stocking: a conceptual framework and a descriptive model
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to compare the fundamental operational differences between kitting and line stocking. The study focuses on the trade-offs in material handling for both processes and considers the development of definitions which would describe their operations. Results show that kitting shifts material handling workload from the shop floor to the storage or retrieval system. In addition, space requirements and median work-in-processes are reduced with kitting.

Storage location assignment: using the product structure to reduce order picking times
Article Abstract:
The storage location assignment strategy (SLASEPS) is developed for prestructuring components and information for picking work in storehouses based on product structure. SLASEPS can reduce pickup times by using variant characteristics as picking information and developing a logical assignment policy. It is shown that the use of SLASEPS resulted in a 96% decrease in passes of undesired variant groups.

Design and performance of kitting and order picking systems
Article Abstract:
Kitting refers to the subassemblies or component supply factor in the assembly process for a given product. The process requires the inclusion of an order picking system that adopts a specific structure and production schedule known beforehand in the assembly line. Kitting system efficiency is achieved when batching policy, picking process and component storage are well-coordinated.
