Starch-based adhesive
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the USDA's National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research has developed a new environment-friendly adhesive that contains no formaldehyde or phenols. The adhesive is made from cornstarch, polyvinyl alcohol, hexamethoxymethylmelamine and citric acid while latex has been added for greater bond strength and moisture resistance. Wood- bonding tests indicate that the adhesive is stronger than the wood. Further research is being done to reduce the production costs, which is 25 to 30 cents higher than for conventional adhesives.
