Article Abstract:
It is suggested that city planning should be based on creating sustainable cities as we approach the 21st century. Provincial cities should be revitalised to offer quality public spaces, which requires investment and local government empowerment. The history of city planning is discussed, along with details of the problems to date and suggestions for the future.

Becoming a town planner
Article Abstract:
Membership of the RTPI, town planners' institute, is examined in the 'Membership, professional standards and identity' discussion paper. The paper suggests that graduates from accredited courses be made probationer members before being elected to corporate membership. The membership would lapse after four years.
