Not dark or satanic: Northern mills, now redundant, offer new hope for local communities
Article Abstract:
Redundant textile mills in Yorkshire and Lancashire could be put to new use, although many are in a poor state of repair and inappropriate for modern use. Further restrictions are encountered if the building is listed. successful conversions into luxury flats and offices can be undertaken often retaining many original historic features. Any regeneration has potential benefit for the community as mills are often at the heart of local communities.

London's new sustainability initiative, the draft Agenda 21 document has been unveiled. Speakers at the launch reiterated the need to make sustainable development the lynchipin of the whole planning system. The ALG believes that Agenda 21 is a catalyst to broaden discussion on local sustainability and that environmental protection, economic development and social equity can be developed together to ensure a more sustainable future.

Unity, purity and a splash of local colour: one man's penchant for purple has stirred up up the differing shades of opinion on conservation controls

There is clear conflict of opinion over conservation controls as the judgement of aesthetics is highly subjective. Conservation officers have to decide when they should wield their strong legilsative powers and when they should allow creativity. Some conservation areas have been adversely affected by small, cosmetic changes to the doors and windows of buildings.
