On your marks
Article Abstract:
Electrical wholesalers have a wide range of electrical cables available and it is essential that contractors understand their technical performance. In the past, the BASEC marking on a cable indicated its quality and performance, but new marks, such as the CE mark and BS 6500, have been added to cable certification. Contractors considering buying cable should understand that the CE mark is attached by the manufacturer and is no real indication of high quality, while BASEC certification indicates that the cable is tested by an independent testing body for up to 150 safety characteristics.

Tooling up for cable tv
Article Abstract:
Two tool kits are needed for installing cable television equipment. Firstly, a technicians kit will be used for bringing the cables into the consumer's house. This should contain a hammer, screwdrivers, cutters, pliers and a cordless drill. More specialised tools include coaxial strippers, 'F'-crimp tools and a cable clip gun. Trunk splicing, which involves joining trunk cable to passive components, requires spanners, jacket strippers and a coring tool. Most cable television equipment originates in North America and is in imperial units.
