Orchestrating graphics, text, sound, and movies
Article Abstract:
Various 'interactive multimedia' applications are on display at the Tech 2000 exposition in Washington, DC. The Name Game, from Mind Bank Inc (Ingomar, PA), is a game that matches names with faces. Speech Viewer, from IBM, uses speech-recognition technology to help speech- and hearing-impaired persons pronounce sounds. Training applications on display include: working as a nursing assistant; defensive driving; firefighting for an F15 airplane; maintaining a Litton navigation system; and teaching the English language and US business customs to the Japanese. Educational applications include: 'A Field Guide to Insects and Culture,' from Cornell University; 'Introduction to Physical Science,' from Texas learning Group; and 'Super Spellicopter,' from Britannica Software. Various other applications having to do with culture or contemporary events are mentioned. Standards for interactive multimedia are still being worked out, so hardware configurations vary: the Philips Consumer Electronics compact disc-interactive (CD-I) display, for example, uses a CDI player, a mouse and a monitor; and Intel Corp favors an arrangement called digital video interactive (DVI), which uses a computer equipped with two proprietary image-processing microchips.
