Putting quality back in the barrel
Article Abstract:
The Barrel Co, originally a one-man venture in the 1800s, has maintained a reputation for manufacturing high quality barrels. Under the management of the founder's heirs, the company has grown steadily, manufacturing a wide range of containers. With the increase in departments within the business came a decrease in customer satisfaction, followed by losses after years of profitability. Management resorted to a focus to quality as the primary goal of the company, already neglected in favor of peripheral concerns. Total quality management has since been the policy guiding company policies.

Partnerships for quality
Article Abstract:
Small- and medium-scale companies face problems similar to those faced by larger companies. Although quality problems are magnified in smaller businesses, they are limited in their efforts to address total quality improvement by a lack of resources. However, small businesses can improve services within locales by developing partnerships, evaluating service systems and taking a global perspective in quality manufacturing. Strategic plans, management and employee training, as well as meeting customer requirements, can also help in quality service and manufacturing initiatives.
