Revising the script after Patriot
Article Abstract:
The Patriot antimissile defense system performs admirably during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, but is not without problems. The Patriot comprises a 4-8GHz phased array radar system, a control station and eight aerodynamically controlled missile launchers. When an object is determined unfriendly, the $600,000 missile is launched and ground radar tracks both the target and the missile. A software problem caused a missed interception during the war, leading to the deaths of 28 US soldiers. The software expects well-behaved targets, but the Iraqi Scud missiles broke up on re-entry. The software timing problem caused the battery to fail to detect and engage the Scud. New high-speed integrated circuits are being added to the weapons control computer and the radar bandwidth is being expanded to 12.5 GHz. An extremely agile missile, the Extended Range Interceptor (Erint) is also being added.
