Rural revivals
Article Abstract:
UK planning law encourages the reuse of derelict agricultural buildings. The buildings have to be permanent and fit in with the surrounding area. There should also be controls over how they are extended. Planners need to assess that the buildings actually exist. In one case a building was found to be structurally unsound after building work had begun, and walls had to be demolished as well as the roof. This led to permission being refused since the building had effectively been demolished. Buildings should also be redundant when permission is granted.

The suing game
Article Abstract:
Representatives of planning authorities should be aware of the possibility of their recommendations concerning the condition and suitability of individual properties may be tested in court. A court case in Welwyn, England resulted in the local council possibly having to pay a substantial amount of money to Slough Estates due to giving incorrect information concerning similar developments. Any suggestions made by planners should be within their designated powers.
