Scientists view the future they will create
Article Abstract:
Scientists play key roles in shaping the future, but ironically many of them do not possess a long-term vision of the future in their respective fields. This wasshown in a report of top scientists' verbatim replies to questions about scientific developments in the future. The replies will undoubtedly influence decisions on research funding and challenge budding scientists. However, it was noted that the scientists' forecasts do not mention radical science, fundamental breakthroughs or alternative competitive science. Moreover, the scientists did not pay attention to the potential social impact of scientific developments.

What Picturephone teaches about forecasting
Article Abstract:
The market failure of AT&T Corp's Picturephone illustrates the difficulty of technological forecasting. According to inventor and information technology expert Robert W. Lucky, the failure of Picturephone can be attributed to a host of conceptual errors, one of which was AT&T's failure to anticipate the fast emergence of developments. AT&T also failed to adequately expect the secondary, downstream and incidental consequences of a new technology when the technology is familiar, common, cheap and widely available.

Three Rs: Recycle, reclaim, remanufacture
Article Abstract:
Thethree Rs, recycle, reclaim and remanufacture, of solid waste management are examined. While recycling is the current focus of interest since it is the easiest the manage, it is considered the least valuable method of solid waste management. Recycling is said to revert a value-added item into a lower qualityraw material. Reclamation is regarded as more socially viable and popular, and along with remanufacturing, is touted as processes which can bring useful effects on the economy, society and the environment.
