Shaky future for leisure planning
Article Abstract:
Leisure development in the UK is likely to proceed along US lines, with many facilities being concentrated into a single large development, according to speakers at the recent Association of Metropolitan Authorities conference. Such developments may be contrary to modern planning aims, but it is important that planners are aware of changes in consumers' demands. Some observers have expressed concern that planners may come under pressure from the demands of the leisure industry.

Rejected councils vow to continue the fight for single-tier status
Article Abstract:
The Local Government Commission has not included a number of local authorities in its draft recommendations on unitary status. Some of these authorities have expressed their determination to fight to be allowed to take on unitary status. These include Spelthorne in Surrey, Exeter and Norwich. They believe that unitary status will make it possible to increase expenditure in certain areas and to more fully address local planning needs.

Unitary status favoured by planners in lucky 10
Article Abstract:
Most of the 10 authorities that have been recommended for unitary status believe that the new single tier structure will improve planning provision and bring decision making closer to the people. Some authorities feel that it will help economic regeneration and give them a greater sense of purpose. CPOs believe the Local Government Commission report is based on consistent planing-related arguments.
