Taking housing policy off the back burner
Article Abstract:
The UK government has delayed a report on housing policy and does not wish to discuss the issue until its delayed report has been released. Meanwhile the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) has issued a report on this topic. Some 4.4 million households will need accommodation from 1991 to 2016. The TCPA argues that a wide range of measures are needed including extending urban buildings and filling in urban sites. The report is in favor of protecting rural areas and regenerating urban areas.

Sold down the river and over the sea: the implications of proposed changes to the way the EU supports development in less prosperous regions will have knock-on-effects for the UK
Article Abstract:
European regional policy commissioner, Monika Wulf-Mathies, has indicated that the number of areas of the EU receiving structural support may be reduced. The commissioner has been influenced by the need for a greater concentration of resources, the requirement to regulate the Structural Fund and the imminent expansion of the EU eastwards. Areas of north west England and the Highlands of Scotland could lose out, and the UK is expected to resist such reductions in grant income.
