The Sergeant York gun: a massive misfire
Article Abstract:
Not all the stories about the Sergeant York automated gun are true, yet the gun performed below expectations. The York gun was an amalgam of existing components for the protection of tanks and troop carriers from air attacks. Over a year ago, Defense Secretary Weinberger halted production of the gun after years of expenses and extensive tests at the cost of $1.9 billion. Its proposed replacement is an assemblage of missiles and guns linked by command, control, and intelligence sensors, which would include a Stinger missile. Major General Maloney thinks that the proposed replacement is "almost what the York could have been."

Fighter aircraft: small and agile
Article Abstract:
The General Dynamics-built F-16 Fighting Falcon is the product of a competitive program to prove technology for producing a lighter and more agile aircraft. A team of 200 engineers, along with manufacturing, tooling, and procurement experts, made up an autonomous organization which developed a prototype in two years. Designers used conventional drafting machines to draw the design on paper, and computers were used to analyze stress factors.
