A U.S. patent is only valid within the U.S. and gives the patent holder no legal recourse should a company sell its invention overseas. The cost of keeping a U.S. patent for ten years is around $10,000 but it would cost around $160,000 to $360,000 to patent the invention to nine other countries.

Hired to invent: your company may own your brainchild
