The simulation of material handling systems
Article Abstract:
This article describes the simulation of material handling (MH) systems using simulation languages and simulators. We first show how to construct a simulation of a MH system using the standard blocks available in two general purpose simulation languages. When building models in this manner, an accurate emulation of the real system can be accomplished. Modeling can be accomplished more rapidly using built-in MH capabilities provided in several simulators and simulation languages and some of these are described in the article. Lastly, we discuss a simulation package that has the capability to model material handling systems with great accuracy. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Spreadsheet risk analysis using simulation
Article Abstract:
For many financial models implemented in electronic spreadsheets, input data values frequently are random variables because they are actually estimates of unknown quantities. As a result, the bottom-line performance measure of the model is a random variable, and risk is associated with decisions based upon it due to the uncertainty in its value. We describe in detail how to evaluate this risk using simulation in a spreadsheet and illustrate the procedure with an example. Formulas for generating random variates from many common distributions using LOTUS 1-2-3 are given, and data analysis considerations are also discussed. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Verifying and validating complex simulation models by analogy
Article Abstract:
This paper describes a procedure used to develop verification and validation techniques for very large simulation models. The procedure uses analogies from other systems to stimulate analogies which can then be implemented in the simulation environment. Sixteen systems were studied and some 64 analogies were developed. Several of the analogies are currently being considered for possible extension and application to complex simulation models. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
