The topsy turvy world of quantum computing
Article Abstract:
Quantum computers, until recently regarded as strange curiosities rather than as actual possibilities, are emerging as realities. Companies funding research include such industry leaders as AT&T, HP, IBM, Lucent Technologies and Microsoft. Anxiety that quantum computers will operate far faster than ordinary computers and be able to factor large numbers to break sophisticated secret codes is one of the motives driving such research. Aside from its potential for such applications, scientists seeking to understand quantum information and how to control it are using quantum computers as tiny laboratories of pure research.
