There's gold in them thar failures!
Article Abstract:
Quality assurance (QA) allows design engineers to recognize early failures and treat those failures as valuable as they will help in effective production with minimum investment. Random failures of early testing and occasional failures in the ultimate stage, when the product is in the customer's hands, need rectification in order to minimize the failures of production. Companies must use a defined and sequenced process to analyze the basic causes of failures. QA personnel educate design engineers about the importance of early failures in design.

Inside the Baldridge Award Guidelines
Article Abstract:
The second part of the 1992 seven examination categories installment on the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award criteria is presented. Known as Category 2, this part involves information and analysis. New concepts and terminology are introduced and the benefits that can be accrued from this process of self-assessment are enumerated. The several common errors that accompany Category 2 are emphasized. To overcome them, questions that summarize the area-to-address requirements are provided and should be satisfactorily accomplished.

A high-involvement redesign
Article Abstract:
Sociotechnical systems (STS) approach to system redesign efforts is a powerful method of improving quality, productivity and employee morale. STS methods utilize a multifunctional work structure with self-governing teams that replace functional departments. Chevron Chemical Company used this approach to redesign its Rock Springs, WY phosphate fertilizer plant. This facility has experienced a 98% improvement in productivity, a 43% increase in production and a 44% decrease in operating expenses between 1987 and 1992.
