Those were the days: what is it like to be an apprentice, all work and no play or vice versa?
Article Abstract:
The life of an apprentice electrician in the 1940s is described, including an apprenticeship with a London electrical contracting company. Apprentices were placed as a mate to a tradesman and technical training involved day release at a technical college and some evenings at night school. This training ran concurrently with studies in City and Guilds and National Certificate courses, with pay linked to college progress. An insight into the many east London industries was provided, including printing and large engineering workshops, during the days of direct-current mains supplies which brought about frequent power failures.

Training for potentially explosive atmospheres
Article Abstract:
Electricians are only allowed to work in conditions where there is a risk of explosions if they are suitably competent. A training course for these hazardous conditions have been devised by the Electrical Installation Engineering Industry Training Organisation (EIEITO) and JT Ltd. under the supervision of the Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Association. The six part course combines practical skills, knowledge and experience and will be assessed by a Competence Validation Test.
