What is capability anyway?
Article Abstract:
Supervisors must know how to compute the capability ratio and the centered capability ratio to determine the reliability of the production process for ball-joint sockets. Both ratios compare the needs of the customer with the process and express the space available as a proportion of the space required. The capability ratio measures the distance between the specification limits and the distance between the natural process limits. The centered capability ratio, on the other hand, expresses the location of the process vis-a-vis the specifications.

QS-9000 training goes beyond the classroom
Article Abstract:
Plexus Corp. and the Big Three automakers, developers of a QS-9000 training program for automotive parts suppliers, are going to widen the program's range globally. Most of the information materials and training modules can be distributed through the Internet, CD-ROMs and manuals. Coaching and consultation services can be done through videoconferencing. This will enable developers and supporters to train companies even in less developed countries and save time from travelling to and from the client's site.

Data linkage key to process improvement
Article Abstract:
Automotive prototype component manufacturer Milford Fabricating Co. uses PC-DMIS software from Automation Software to facilitate the transfer of complex files between computer-aided design (CAD) and coordinate-measuring-machine software. Use of this system hastened production by about 100 times. Any segment of a contoured surface is measured by a curves and surfaces program and production personnel can easily retrieve essential parts of a CAD design.
