Impact of various flexibility types in a hybrid fabrication/assembly production system
Article Abstract:
An investigation of the impact of three types of flexibility on manufacturing performance provides management with better insight into prioritizing and determining the scope or scale of parameters such as standardization for design, process/operations improvement and capital investments. The impact of machine flexibility, routing flexibility and volume flexibility in a production system comprised of a parts fabrication process and an assembly line, especially in situations where urgent orders and machine breakdown are not negligible, was examined. Findings showed that the type of flexibility should be chosen with consideration of the relationships among these flexibility types.

Comparison between simple infinite loading and loading considering a workload status under uncertainty in job operation times
Article Abstract:
Two loading approaches are compared, one which considers a workload status in setting planned lead times for tasks and another which ignores workload status. Their performances under uncertainty in job operation times were evaluated via two simulation study phases, namely, a loading phase and a sequencing and executing phase. Loading considering a workload status was found to be the best approach, although its superiority was found to be lost in real-life scenarios where several disturbances are present.

Concepts, practices and expectations of MRP, JIT and OPT in Finland and Japan
Article Abstract:
Material requirements planning (MRP), just-in-time inventory systems (JIT) and OPT are compared in the Finnish and Japanese environments. Differences were observed between the two countries' concepts and practices of manufacturing and operations management. These differences in production and inventory control practices are attributed to varying interpretations and current states that dominate the two countries.
