A Markov model projection of soil organic carbon stores following land use changes
Article Abstract:
The use of a Markov model to examine potential future effects of changes in patterns of land use in England, Wales and Scotland reflect overall trends of decreased potential soil carbon storage capacity. Using calculations of land cover transition matrices and their corresponding soil organic carbon stores, projections for 10 transitions (60) years from 1984 reveals separate results for the 3 areas. Patterns of land cover change for England and Wales show the greatest decrease of land under ley and gain of land under permanent grass, while Scotland shows the greatest decrease of upland grass.

Application of CORINE land-cover mapping to estimate carbon stored in the vegetation of Ireland
Article Abstract:
The Co-ordination of Information on the Environment land cover database for Ireland has been used to estimate the amount of carbon stored by each land-cover type. Comparison of the land-cover types indicates that forests represent only 4.3% of the land cover of Ireland, but hold 49% of the vegetation carbon stored.

Soil carbon stocks and changes in the Republic of Ireland
Article Abstract:
The soil carbon (C) stock of the Republic of Ireland is estimated to be 2048 Mt in 1990 and 2021 Mt in 2000. Considering uncertainties in the data used to calculate soil C stocks and changes, the small average 'loss' could be regarded as 'no change'.
