Unit pricing of residential municipal solid waste: lessons from nine case study communities
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the use of unit pricing of residential solid waste in nine communities to determine whether such approach would improve households' waste behavior patterns. These communities are located in California, Illinois and Michigan and use variable fee structures. Results showed that unit pricing encourage some limited waste reduction and diversion behavior. Waste diversion was mostly through recycling and yard waste collection.
