Biogeochemical impacts of submerging forests through large dams in the Rio Negro, Uruguay
Article Abstract:
The successive construction of large dams has had a significant impact on reservoir biogeochemistry along the Rio Negro in Uruguay. Among a total of 30 woody species identified in the floodplain forests studied, there was a significant decrease in tree height, stem density, wood biomass and basal area from the riparian forest to patch and transition forests. There were also changes in nutrient concentrations in wood along the floodplain. In riparian forests, phosphorous was higher than in other forest types. There was a rise in N from the riparian to patch and transition forests.

Characterizing backcountry camping impacts in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has used multivariate methods to identify the dimensional structure of camping impact indicators. Other aims of this research included assessing use and site characteristics of campsite topology. It was possible to identify three dimensions of camping impact and four campsite types through factor and cluster analyses. Future campsite impact assessment and monitoring efforts should seek to ensure that data collection approaches meet the main requirements for multivariate analyses.
