Burning Hanford's radioactive waste: from land to sky
Article Abstract:
Greenpeace volunteers aided the citizens of Hanford, WA, in their protest against Chem-Waste's plan to set up an incinerator to dispose of the radioactive waste left after the US Department of Energy (DOE) closed down the local nuclear weapons plant. Hanford's environment was adversely affected by the radioactive wastes released by the weapons plant, a fact which was concealed from the public for security reasons. The building of three incinerators on the site of the nuclear weapons plant would lead to the creation of an atmospheric 'landfill' of highly toxic substances.

The deluge: new republics waste-deep in old messes
Article Abstract:
The former nations that comprised the Soviet Union are faced with the problems of nuclear waste disposal and nuclear accidents that had its beginnings in the Cold War. Chernobyl and Chelyabinsk nuclear weapons production site are instances of the carlessness of the former Soviet Union. Nuclear waste dumping in the Arctic Ocean and the explosion of a nuclear reactor on a submarine at Chazma Bay will take years to rectify.

Wimping out: will Congress bow to industry pressure on waste?
Article Abstract:
The US Congress may revise the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) to focus only on municipal solid waste because of corporate influence. Municipal solid waste comprises 2% of the waste produced nationally. The ammendment will ignore many issues the RCRA should take into consideration that are pivotal to the environmentalist movement.
