Chlorine: bleaching away a region's life
Article Abstract:
The Champion International pulp mill in Canton, NC, had been using chlorine bleaching agents on its wood pulp since 1908, causing severe pollution in the Pigeon River. Forced to change because of protests and a lawsuit, the mill management at first threatened to fire 1,000 workers, and then made the worst environmental decision it could by converting to the use of chlorine dioxide in 1990. Further protests have led the managers of the mill to plan another type of pollution by burning the chlorinated wastes.

Breast cancer: the chlorine connection
Article Abstract:
The number of breast-cancer cases reported in the US between 1980-87 rose by 32%. Women have a one in eight chance of getting breast cancer. Scientific evidence suggests that organochlorines, a group of chemicals made from chlorine, cause breast cancer. DDT, PCBs and dioxin are some of the most notorious organochlorines. Chemicals made with organochlorines should be phased out of production.
