Community-level birth rate: A missing link between ecology, evolution and diversity
Article Abstract:
A conceptual model to explain the variation in species richness in local communities and in build-up of regional species pools over time is presented. The model offers a reconciliation of two contrasting paradigms in current community ecology, that is, one focusing on present time ecological processes and the other focusing on historical events governing the size of species pools which in turn determines local richness.

Mid-domain models as predictors of species diversity patterns: Bathymetric diversity gradients in the deep sea
Article Abstract:
A study explores how variations in the assumptions of null models alter depth ranges and consequently bathymetric variation in diversity. The extent to which bathymetric patterns of species diversity in deep sea gastropods, bivalves, and polychaetes match null predictions based on geometric constraints is tested.

Individuals as the basic accounting unit in studies of ecosystem function: Functional diversity in shepherd's purse, Capsella
Article Abstract:
An individual based approach is proposed to examine the functional attributes of arable plants that affect resource acquisition, partitioning, and energy transfer through the food web. Capsella is proposed as a key species that is widespread, ecologically important, and physiologically and genetically diverse.
