Effects of exclosure and management on biomass and soil nutrient pools in seasonally dry high country, New Zealand
Article Abstract:
A study of the grasslands of Benmore Range, South Island, New Zealand showed that grazing induces loss of soil nutrients, though its non-application positively affects by increasing root mass. It was also found that soil nutrients can be preserved by putting a ground cover through oversowing and limiting grazing in the area. Furthermore, the application of fertilizer was observed to increase the soil's carbon and nitrogen. However, it also caused the change in native vegetation and promoted soil acidification.

Cadmium in aquatic ecosystems in Western Australia: A legacy of nutrient-deficient soils
Article Abstract:
Over 273 tonnes of cadmium have been added to Western Australian ecosystems by the application of superphosphate fertilizers, since 1982. The water leaches into waterbodies, accumulating in sediments, from where it enters the food web. Cadmium levels of the freshwater mussels exceeded Australia New Zealand Food Authority guidelines for Maximum Permissible Concentrations with regard to human consumption. Management options to reduce the level of Cd from fertilizers are discussed.
