Uptake of salmon-derived nitrogen by mosses and liverworts in coastal British Columbia
Article Abstract:
The contribution of salmon-derived nitrogen to common moss and liverwort species at three representative watersheds on the central coast of British Columbia, Canada is investigated. It is concluded that Rhytidiadelphus loreus, the most abundant moss species, exhibits elevated nitrogen levels on bear trails and feeding-micro-sites where salmon nutrients are available and suggests coarse-grained distribution of nutrient source pools.

A bounded null model explains juvenile tree community structure along light availability gradients in a temperate rain forest
Article Abstract:
A study shows distribution of juvenile trees in relation to canopy openness in a temperate rainforest, and tests the hypothesis that competitive sorting causes coexisting species to overlap less in light environment occupancy than would be expected by chance. The lack of constraints on pairwise overlap suggests that differences in light use are not a prerequisite for tree species coexistance.
