Environmental contamination in the central part of the Kola Peninsula: history, documentation, and perception
Article Abstract:
Russia's Kola Peninsula is presented as a case study for environmental policy research and development, focusing on the nickel-copper smelter plant in the town of Monchegorsk. Pollution generated by the smelter affects forests more significantly than submontane ecosystems; public responses are mapped from tolerance of pollution in the 1950s to active protests in the early 1990s, which have decreased due to the country's growing economic problems.

Environmental effects of one thousand years of copper production at Falun, central Sweden
Article Abstract:
Research shows that while 8 of 14 Swedish lakes have become acidic due to copper production in Falun, none indicate any recovery from acidification, which is attributed to both changes in land use and sizeable amounts of sulfate accumulated within the soil. Cumulated effects of sulfur dioxide emissions from copper mining were calculated for dry deposition, air concentrations, metal pollution and acidification.

Soviet and post-Soviet environmental management: lessons from a case study on lead pollution
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the environmental policies of the Soviet Union and the former Soviet Union region indicate an emphasis on preventing pollution from multiple threats, instead of human exposure to individual pollutants. While Soviet bans on lead-based paint and leaded gasoline have been effective, post-Soviet environmental problems involve control of lead-acid batteries.
