"Guardianship" and "rural workshop"-the first quarter-century of UK experience in nature conservation
Article Abstract:
The first quarter-century of post-war adjustment to the needs of farming and wildlife conservation was memorialized through the archival material that survived for the Ministry of Agriculture and Nature Conservancy. The agencies argued before on whether the agricultural improvement grants should be paid for land scheduled as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Both parties recognized the Countryside Bill as an opportunity to obtain greater protection for SSSIs.

War and the development of nature conservation in Britain
Article Abstract:
The creation of the Nature Conservancy in the UK in 1949 was a result of environmental and sustainable development interests that arose at the end of World War II. A Conference on Nature Preservation was held to include environmental concerns in post-war reconstruction plans. Government committees then addressed the creation of a series of nature reserves that would take a long-range view of nature conservation. This led to the creation of the Nature Conservancy.

The strategic gap in air-quality management
Article Abstract:
A new study investigates the fitness of the current air-quality plan for the management of the tropospheric zone, focusing on the need to demonstrate that a change in behaviour is needed in the local and regional environment. The UK National Air Quality Strategy's ability to facilitate such a change is discussed.
