Increased soil nitrogen associated with dinitrogen-fixing, terricolors lichens of the genus Peltigera in northern Minnesota
Article Abstract:
Field and laboratory investigations were conducted with the primary objective of determining whether soil N availability is increased near healthy thalli of terricolous dinitrogen-fixing lichens. For this, available soil N in situ with ion-exchange resin bags, potentially mineralizable N with laboratory incubations, total soil N, and soil temperature is measured.

Lichens and mosses promote alternate stable plant communities in the New Jersey Pinelands
Article Abstract:
The dynamics of moss-lichen interactions leading to two alternative stable states of stable open cryptogam mats versus a succession of vascular plants are investigated. The fluctuating warm and dry versus cool and moist conditions help in the development of alternative stable states.

Digestive mutualism, an alternate pathway in plant carnivory
Article Abstract:
The precise definition of a carnivorous plant is discussed. Alternative methods of prey digestion represent extremely specialized adaptations to the carnivorous syndrome.
