Protected area theory at the system level
Article Abstract:
The total area protected and the internal demand for protection is determined by population density and the degrees of urbanization. The protected area system and the balance between protected natural and cultural landscapes within that area differs in different countries. Based on urban and rural population densities, twenty-five European countries have been classified into four groups to test the effects of population density and urbanization on the total area designated as protected.
