Valuing the benefits of landscape restoration: a case study of the cotentin in lower-Normandy, France
Article Abstract:
The conversion of farmland to non-agricultural uses in Western France has caused hedgerows and small fields to disappear. The loss of these landmarks has raised a vital policy issue. The creation of new hedges and the improvement of existing ones is the response to this concern. A case study on the possible restoration of hedgerows in an area affected by the Dutch elm disease and plot consolidation is examined. Residents agreed to offer financial support for the study.

Simulating urban encroachment on rural land with fuzzy-logic-controlled cellular automata in a geographical information system
Article Abstract:
A geographical information system featuring fuzzy-logic cellular (FLC) automata software technology is used to simulate land encroachment for urban edge expansion studies. Mathematical techniques used to establish cellular automation and FLC calculations are discussed. Findings indicate that the prototype system can be used to aid decision-making processes within development planning management.
