Remembering Cynthia Wiggins: a lesson in transportation and community revitalization
Article Abstract:
Wiggins, age 17, died crossing a 7-lane highway, 300 yards away from her fast-food job at Walden Galleria Mall near Buffalo, NY. Investigators revealed that her bus, an inner-city line, was deliberately excluded from entering by mall owners. 1991 federal law makes transit planning much more democratic.

Rail, real estate, and reality
Article Abstract:
Property development interests have controlled the transportation planning process since the steam train lines of the mid-1800s. Rail was used to increase sprawl, and then abandoned - a recurring historical pattern.
