Scientific characterization and monitoring: its application to integrated coastal management in Malaysia
Article Abstract:
An overview is presented on Malaysia's environmental management of coastal zones, focusing on successes and failures. Successes include the use of multi-sectoral input for identifying management priorities and the promotion of tourist activities that reduce coral reef degradation; failures include unmanaged tourism, which has been shown to create greater harm than previous practices.

Arthropods in urban habitat fragments in southern California: area, age and edge effects
Article Abstract:
The effects of habitat quality and predation are analyzed for non-ant arthropod distribution in California's southern coast. Overall, arthropod abundance and point diversity corresponded positively with fragment area but negatively with fragment age; specific findings are also presented for Blattaria, Dermaptera, Isopoda, Coleoptera, Acarina, Hemiptera, and Diptera.

Effect of human development on bacteriological water quality in coastal watersheds
Article Abstract:
Research is presented on the content of Escherichia coli and fecal coliform bacteria in urban runoff, and its interaction with seawater. Both contaminants were inversely correlated with salinity, positively correlated with turbidity, and strongly linked to watershed development.
