Seeds of discord
Article Abstract:
The European Country (EC) and the US signed an agreement in 1962 permitting the US to export oilseeds to the EC duty-free. The EC offered subsidies to its oilseed crushers, which resulted in a decrease in the import of oilseeds from the US. The US protested to no avail, and was forced to approach the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1987 to negotiate with the EC. This approach was also unsuccessful, and only the threat of retaliation from the US made the EC agree to negotiations. The GATT Secretary General Arthur Dunkel arbitrated and brought the two parties to an agreement. France did not agree to the terms, and continues to disagree with the US, though the rest of the EC supports the US.

Making the impossible possible: growing crops with salt water
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Research Laboratory (ERL) of the University of Arizona at Tucson, AZ, conducted research in growing plants in seawater. ERL examined the plant characteristics of a wild plant called samphire (Salicornia bigevolii Torr.) and found that it was viable in salt water. The plant has protein and seeds rich in oil. ERL was successful in producing a plant species 50 cm tall called SOS-7 which can survive torrid climates amd sandy, dry soils. ERL was able to yield 250 tons of seeds worth 65 tons of oil and 165 tons of protein meal. Currently, ERL is still in pursuit of developing a better breed to increase harvest.
