The value of water: floodplain versus large-scale irrigation benefits in northern Nigeria
Article Abstract:
Nigeria's water management policies are interfering with normal river floodplain activity. The primary culprit is large-scale irrigation, which does not account for negative impacts on downstream wetlands. Responsible irrigation practices should include regulated flood releases to minimize damages to fuelwood and fishing sources at the expense of higher agricultural benefits. Expansion of irrigation within the river floodplain should also be halted.

Water scarcity as a key factor behind global food insecurity: round table discussion
Article Abstract:
Limits to generating global food production are directly linked to a growing water supply crisis. Agriculture will have to compete with urban populations and industry for adequate supply, and wetland habitats will be threatened as human demand is used to rationalize water withdrawal. Conflicts resulting from scarcity may require the establishment of global food and water supply banks.

Resource scarcity and innovation: can poor countries attain endogenous growth
Article Abstract:
Endogenous growth models have generated much debate about the role of technological advances in economic growth and development. Although many agree that policy and institutional failures have prevented poor countries from using technology for economic growth, others belive this view ignores the contribution of natural resource degradation and institutional instability.
