Economic values of Danube floodplains
Article Abstract:
The total annual economic value of the Danube floodplains is estimated at ECU 650 mil. Rough calculations of values are made on the basis of the results of other studies. The value of three habitats chosen are forests, grasslands and permanent water. Floodplain services are valuated in terms of input resources, nutrient sinks, and recreation. Results reveal that the value of floodplains as nutrient sinks may account for over half the total value. Approximately two-thirds of this is obtained in Romania. The need for ecosystem models is highlighted.

Nutrient reductions to the Baltic Sea: ecology, costs and benefits
Article Abstract:
A study of the costs and benefits of decreasing pollution in the Baltic Sea by lowering phosphorus and nitrogen content is presented. The research showed that the administration of a 50% nutrient reduction had equal benefits and costs amounting to 30,000 million Swedish krona annually. It also suggests the use of programs of cost-effective distribution measures for Baltic Sea countries as to experience an improved coastal water ecology. This entails changes in agricultural practice, construction of sewage treatment plants and wetland restoration.

Economic evaluation of a regionalization program for solid waste management in a metropolitan region
Article Abstract:
An examination of plan for regionalizing solid waste management in Taipei, Taiwan, reveals that regionalization can reduce costs whilst providing adequate services. It also shows that a proposed GIS-based optimization methodology for examining the costs and benefits is a suitable model for examining the issues relating to a large metropolitan area. The methodology considers criteria, including costs, transfer station location and political feasibility, which could be in conflict with one another.
